Background of the Study

Chemotherapy is a widely used treatment for cancer but is associated with a range of side effects that can negatively affect patients' physical and emotional well-being. These side effects include nausea, fatigue, hair loss, and neuropathy, which can significantly impair patients' quality of life and affect their adherence to treatment. Educating patients about chemotherapy side effects and strategies to manage them can improve treatment adherence and patient satisfaction.

Ladoke Akintola University Teaching Hospital (LAUTECH) in Osun State provides comprehensive cancer care services, including chemotherapy. This study aims to assess the effectiveness of chemotherapy education, led by oncology nurses, in reducing the severity and frequency of patient-reported side effects.

Statement of the Problem

Despite the availability of strategies to manage chemotherapy-related side effects, many patients still experience significant discomfort, which can affect their overall treatment experience. Education on managing side effects has the potential to improve symptom control and enhance patient outcomes. However, there is limited research on the direct impact of chemotherapy education on patient-reported side effects at LAUTECH. This study seeks to investigate this relationship and explore the role of oncology nurses in delivering effective chemotherapy education.

Objectives of the Study

  1. To evaluate the impact of chemotherapy education on reducing patient-reported side effects at LAUTECH.
  2. To assess the role of oncology nurses in delivering effective chemotherapy education to patients.
  3. To explore whether chemotherapy education influences patient satisfaction and adherence to treatment.

Research Questions

  1. How does chemotherapy education reduce the severity of patient-reported side effects at LAUTECH?
  2. What specific aspects of chemotherapy education are most effective in managing side effects?
  3. How does chemotherapy education impact patient adherence to treatment and overall satisfaction?

Research Hypotheses

  1. Chemotherapy education significantly reduces the severity and frequency of patient-reported chemotherapy side effects at LAUTECH.
  2. Patients who receive chemotherapy education report higher levels of satisfaction with their treatment.
  3. Chemotherapy education provided by oncology nurses improves patient adherence to chemotherapy regimens.

Scope and Limitations of the Study

The study will focus on cancer patients undergoing chemotherapy at LAUTECH and assess the impact of chemotherapy education on side effects. Limitations include patient recall bias in reporting side effects and variability in educational approaches among nurses.

Definitions of Terms

  • Chemotherapy Education: Information provided to cancer patients by oncology nurses regarding chemotherapy treatment, its side effects, and strategies for managing those side effects.
  • Side Effects: Adverse effects of chemotherapy, including fatigue, nausea, vomiting, and hair loss, which can impact patients’ quality of life.
  • Patient Adherence: The degree to which patients follow prescribed chemotherapy regimens, which is influenced by education and side effect management strategies.
